Design Director in Guildford 

Are you a talented Game Designer with years of games industry experience on your back? Does the idea of building a new team from the ground up excite you? If so, keep reading for details of this opportunity... 

As a Design Director at this studio in Guildford, you will work to hire a diverse and talented team of designers to create impressive games, driving quality for products and ensuring everything aligns to the game vision as well as expectations of players and business needs. Ultimately, you will take ownership over building the design department from scratch and making it the best it can be. This role has the potential to be fully remote from within the UK. 

This brand-new studio is parented by a huge award-winning developer of VR experiences, so this is a super exciting opportunity to become a pioneering member of a new team with huge ambitions. Backed by the flexibility of a start-up combined with the experience of a seasoned team behind some huge, globally loved hit games this studio is destined for success. 

Design Director key responsibilities: 

  • Build and shape the team 
  • Hire, manage and mentor designers 
  • Convey a design vision and pillars to rally the team 
  • Run design sprints and workshops to explore the problem space 
  • Forge the feel and mechanics of the product from scratch 
  • Communicate design thinking through prototypes, documentation and other medium 
  • Evaluate product requirements, raise risks and propose solutions 
  • Create documentation, systems and levels during the initial growth phase of the studio 

Essential requirements for this role in Guildford: 

  • Able to build a game and a team from the ground up 
  • Extensive experience in the games industry 
  • Have worked on three or more shipped games 
  • Strong knowledge of common game engines such as Unreal or Unity 
  • Able to work in an Agile environment 
  • Knowledge of the games industry and business trends

A little bit about the city: Guildford 

Located in a beautiful spot in between London and England’s south coast, Guildford is a busy market town that has been recently updated to be home to some great modern facilities such as an award-winning sport centre, including an ice rink and athletics stadium. However, there is still some culture to be explored in this city, with its historic buildings, beautiful parks and a theatre. Sitting on top of a central hill, Guildford Cathedral looks over the city whilst being surrounded by beautiful, picturesque scenery, making for some great exploring. Situated just outside of London, Guildford is a short 35-minute journey into the capital by train, so is ideally positioned so you are not too far away from a day trip to the big city!
