PYXEL-PERFECT PORTFOLIOS #9: MOBILE 3D ARTIST
Welcome back to our Pyxel-Perfect Portfolio series!
Working across gaming recruitment is a truly exciting experience across the board, the people you meet and the processes you find yourselves involved in are always going to keep you on your toes. At Skillsearch we genuinely pride ourselves in our ability to assist artists and developers along the recruitment trail, both through helping them across the interview process and advising them on their portfolio approach.
Mobile Art has many specific styles, so show them all off on your portfolio and keep it updated!
Every mobile game has its unique art style, even the ones focussing on a more realistic theme, so it's very key to show off the various styles you have worked on, even if it’s just a couple of models. A solid tip here would be to include all your work on one game within one collection on ArtStation and set the cover art to the cover art of the game itself, so people can immediately identify the projects you have worked on and whether the styles are correlative. You will often find it’s the work on lesser-known titles that will catch the eyes of the decision-makers.
Mobile Studios tend to love an all-rounder, so make sure this is visible
There is a large selection of Mobile Games studios that thrive off a more indie-style atmosphere, with people pitching in across different areas in both 3D & 2D to create something truly vibrant. So, if you’ve worked on concept work for your 3D art, for instance, include it in the collections you are posting. Studios will always love seeing the technical side of your work, so including in-engine screenshots or rotatable models will always show you are willing to go the extra mile. Even in the larger scale setups, showing your understanding of pipelines and the full production cycle will always hold you in good stead for the more senior positions.
Mobile games thrive off skins and variation, so showing iterations of your work can push your portfolio that extra mile
If there’s a common theme among these blogs, it’s that variation of your portfolio will always be a key factor in landing a new position. Within the mobile games space, there is always a need for a new skin or weapon wrap to keep the user base engaged, so showing your creativity by providing multiple versions of the same model is always going to help showcase your skills. This goes for characters, creatures, weapons, trophies and everything in between.
These three simple tweaks to your portfolio, in our experience, can make a huge difference in your appeal to your potential future employers and at Skillsearch, we are always happy to help advise you further.
