Know the Numbers – Why Data is the New Interview Must Have in Games

Interviews in the games industry have never been tougher. Studios are now looking for absolute precision, not just in skill but in evidence of performance. Specifics matter more than ever before. It’s no longer enough to say you’ve “worked on successful projects” or “led strong campaigns”, hiring managers want measurable proof. If you’ve ever left an interview thinking you said all the right things, but something didn’t click, it might be because the numbers weren’t there to back it up.

Across the industry, we’re seeing more roles anchored in marketing, product, analytics and business development, all areas built on data, KPIs and measurable results. These functions exist to drive revenue, optimise player engagement and maximise growth. Whether you’re building player retention strategies or managing a live ops roadmap, understanding and communicating data is now just as important as creative thinking or technical execution.

From a studio’s perspective, specifics are no longer optional, they’re essential. In a competitive market where every hire matters, data helps hiring managers make confident, informed decisions. Metrics give shape to a candidate’s story, turning “I achieved great results” into “I grew user engagement by 25%” or “I helped drive a 30% uplift in revenue.” When hiring budgets are tight, and every project counts, numbers bring certainty to what can otherwise be a subjective process.

Over the last year, one consistent trend has stood out. For roles with a commercial or analytical focus, the main reason candidates fall short isn’t experience, it’s uncertainty. A lack of confidence or consistency when discussing data can quickly undermine even the strongest track record. When numbers aren’t clear, hiring managers struggle to assess impact, and the conversation loses momentum.

If your next role revolves around data, make sure you can prove your impact. Keep your achievements documented and visible, both in your CV and during interviews. A strong grasp of your metrics doesn’t just show what you’ve done, it shows that you understand how success is measured and valued. That mindset alone sets candidates apart in an increasingly metrics-driven world.

Tips for Nailing the Numbers

  1. Have your key stats ready. It sounds simple, but under interview pressure, it’s easy to forget exact figures. Having them written down means you can refer confidently and maintain control of the conversation.

  2. Revise your results. Like preparing for an exam, refreshing your memory on key metrics helps you deliver them naturally. Clear, assured answers inspire confidence in your ability.

  3. Connect the dots. Don’t just recite numbers, explain what they meant. Did that engagement spike improve retention? Did your campaign lift revenue? Showing you understand the value behind the data transforms raw figures into meaningful results.
