Our annual Games Brains of Brighton quiz came back bigger and better than ever this year!
We can back for our seventh year with a brand new trophy and raffle prizes in tow, as twelve teams battled it out to be crowned winners and raise money for SpecialEffect in the Folklore Rooms.
The Charity
SpecialEffect helps people of all ages with disabilities and illnesses to be able to play and enjoy video games despite not having the physical ability to do so with standard gaming equipment. They do this by creating custom controllers for each individual – enabling them to enjoy and get into gaming!
So far, their custom equipment has taken them from rejigging classic controllers for easier accessibility to building eye-control technology and chin-operated joysticks! SpecialEffect visit individuals to find out their unique needs and then go away and create technology that truly is personalised to them.
This amazing work levels the playing field by making games accessible to absolutely everybody and brings families and friends together. It has been found that the creation and use of such technology and devices have worked to aid therapy, rehabilitation, and confidence in such individuals.
A massive shoutout to Liam Lawler from SpecialEffect who came along to this year’s Games Brains quiz to join the Skillsearch quiz team (we needed all the help we could get!) and say a few words about the work they do.
The Teams
The games studios of Brighton joined us in full force on this rainy December evening! With teams from Electric Square, Studio Gobo, Unity, FuturLab, Hangar13, Hardball, Lively, Playmint and our very own Skillsearch team, this room was packed, we sent a big thank you to all who came along!
The Quiz
This year's quiz was a team effort from Joe, Jay, Wade and Sam who put their heads together to create our most challenging set of rounds yet, with audio rounds, picture rounds, and some questions about our beautiful city of Brighton contributed by our fabulous CEO Richard.
As usual, the quiz was delivered without fault by Joe, our resident quiz master.
Anagrams
Upon arrival, the teams were met with a difficult anagram round, made up of Brighton pubs, something you would assume all the Brighton residents gathered above a pub would do particularly well in…
Can you get these anagrams?

Picture Round
One of the most challenging rounds of the evening was the picture round, this year we asked AI to come up with pictures of some of our most beloved game characters having a lovely at the beach! Can you decipher who these characters are?

Games Rounds x3
The pictures were followed by three rounds of pure game knowledge. From classics like Call of Duty, The Sims and Mario, to questions niche enough to get audible groans from the crowd, there was a wide range of knowledge needed for these rounds!
Audio Round
Possibly one of the most difficult rounds we've seen at Games Brains, Wade collected game quotes from across tens of games, and asked the teams to answer the names of the characters saying these quotes! This one was a tough one, with no teams managing to get all the answers right on this one.
Brighton Round
This year our CEO helped out by writing us some questions about our fine city! This round featured 10 questions about our home town, for example, do you know how many domes the pavilion has?
Raffle
Between quiz rounds, we ran around the room offering the teams raffle tickets to raise extra money for SpecialEffect, who kindly donated us a stunning keyboard prize! With festive extra prizes such as mince pies and wine on offer, and the tickets sold like wildfire, it was certainly a successful night for SpecialEffect donations so we thank everyone who bought a raffle ticket!
For our grand finale...
we brought back the excitement of last year with The Price is Right!
One person from each team was invited up to the stage and game titles from 2023 were displayed one by one. For each game, the teams used their higher and lower arrows to decide which one took longer to complete.
Get one wrong and you’re out! The last man standing gets an extra 10 points for their team. And this year those 10 points made all the difference, as after a tense last round our winners were…
FuturLab!
Congratulations to the team who came from behind right at the end to win our beautiful trophy!
Thank you to all the other teams, Electric Square, Studio Gobo, Unity, Hangar13 (our winners from the previous year), Hardball, Lively and Playmint and of course Liam and the Skillsearch team too!
If you’d like to get your hands on the quiz from this year and give it a go yourself at home or at your studio, don’t hesitate to contact Joe at jm@skillsearch.com for the questions!
